Steep slopes are slopes that rise at least 10 feet high over a horizontal distance of 25 feet or less.

The ideal slope for in-ground building is a slope of 5 to 7 feet through the width of the house, or 15% to 20%. Building on steeper slopes often presents challenges, and this type of construction is carefully regulated by local jurisdictions that vary, as do local soil types.

Environmentally critical areas (ECAs) include wetlands, flood-prone areas, abandoned landfills, fish and wildlife habitat conservation areas, and steep slopes and other geologic hazard areas.

However, for steep slopes, a variance may be possible under 25.09. 180. E, for projects within the Shoreline District (Chapter 23.60A) and 25.09. 290 for projects outside the Shoreline District, or a Category IV wetland buffer may be reduced under 25.09.

Moderate slopes: 10 - 15 % gradient. Steep slopes: 16 - 30 % gradient. Extremely steep slopes: 31 - 60% gradient. Excessively steep slopes: > 60% gradient.

Steep Slope Hazard,Steep slopes (meaning slopes greater than 40% grade and greater than 10 feet tall) are regulated as critical areas in King County because of the potential for erosion problems and landsliding on the slopes.
