The Hall thruster has other significant advantages such as: long life (10,000 h), high power density (0.4–1.3 kW/kg), and advantageous specific impulse range (1000–2000 s).

The electrons in the circulating Hall current ionize the onboard propellant - the inert gas xenon - and create an ionized plasma. Most thrusters ionize propellant by electron bombardment: a high-energy electron (negative charge) collides with a propellant atom (neutral charge), releasing electrons from the propellant atom and resulting in a positively charged ion.

Modern Hall thrusters have achieved efficiencies as high as 75% through advanced designs. Compared to chemical rockets, the thrust is very small, on the order of 83 mN for a typical thruster operating at 300 V and 1.5 kW.

The ionized plasma is then accelerated by the electric field to exhaust velocities of greater than 25,000 m/s. With no moving mechanical parts and a simple electrical layout, Hall thrusters are extremely reliable; no on-orbit thruster failures have been reported to-date.

Used for propelling Earth-orbiting satellites and deep-space robotic vehicles, the HET gets its name because it traps electrons with an intense radial magnetic field in an azimuthal Hall current moving around the circumference of an annular ceramic channel.
