A Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP) is a minimum pension normally provided through a workplace pension scheme to people who contracted-out of the additional State Pension between 6 April 1978 and 5 April 1997.

What's GMP? Guaranteed Minimum Pensions (GMPs) are a defined benefit underpin broadly equal to SERPS (the State Earnings-Related Pension Scheme) which must be provided by schemes if they contracted out of SERPS.

An arrangement in a defined benefit scheme whereby a certain minimum benefit accrues on a defined contribution basis. Usually of benefit to early leavers. Related stories.

Tax free cash entitlement As GMP is a promise to pay a certain amount of defined benefit pension from age 60 (women) / 65 (men), it must normally be paid as a pension. No tax free cash can be paid from GMP rights, unless the member is retiring on grounds of serious ill-health.

For men, GMP is payable from age 65, but for women it's payable from age 60.

This means you will normally get a separate basic State Pension as well as your NHS pension. As the NHS Pension Scheme was contracted out of the State Pension arrangements, it may affect the amount of State Pension you receive.

A trivial commutation lump sum can be paid at any time after GMP Age (age 65 - men; age 60 - women) or from age 55 if your pension does not include a Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP) entitlement. * The 'cash equivalent value' represents the value of your whole pension, in cash terms.

Your GMP is worked out based on your level of NI contributions, the length of time you were in the pension scheme, and how much of this was pre-1988 and post-1988. It is best to ask your scheme exactly how much you will receive, as the calculation is not a simple one.
