The electron-capture detector is an ionization detector and its response is based upon the ability of molecules with certain functional groups to capture electrons generated by the radioactive source. The detector chamber contains two electrodes and a radioactive foil as the radiation source.

Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detection (GC-ECD) Electron Capture Detectors use a radioactive source to send constant current of electrons across the mobile phase. Once a compound enters the current it begins to “capture” electrons, which decreases the current.

The ECD detector uses a sealed source of 63Ni which is radioactive (beta-ray) to ionize the carrier gas. The fast beta particles generated by the source collide with the molecules of the carrier gas. Free slowly-moving electrons are produced by impact ionization and generate a measurable and constant current.

The electron capture detector (ECD) is a selective detector inasmuch that analytes with a high electron affinity, such as halogenated organic compounds, are detected at very low on-column quantities [7].

An ECD has a limited dynamic range and finds its greatest application in analysis of halogenated compounds. The detection limit for electron capture detectors is 5 femtograms per second (fg/s) and the detector commonly exhibits a 10,000-fold linear range.

Sensitivity. Depending on the analyte, an ECD can be 10-1000 times more sensitive than a flame ionization detector (FID), and one million times more sensitive than a thermal conductivity detector (TCD). An ECD has a limited dynamic range and finds its greatest application in analysis of halogenated compounds.

The ECD is a selective, high-sensitivity detector for electrophilic compounds. The ECD is capable of detecting organic halogen compounds, organic metal compounds, diketone compounds, etc.

Disposal of Source – Once a detector is beyond its serviceable life, specific and general licensed devices must be returned to a specific licensee, usually the manufacturer, for disposal. An exempt device can be disposed of through the regular trash, provided that all radioactive labels be removed beforehand.
