There are eight cues or clues that a police officer is looking for on the Walk & Turn Test; they are as follows: Can't keep balance during instructions. Starts too soon. Stops walking. Misses heel-to-toe. Steps off line. Uses arms for balance. Improper turn. Incorrect number of steps.

While the test is being performed, the officer is looking for certain clues: (1) putting your foot down before the test is completed; (2) swaying while trying to maintain your balance; (3) hopping while trying to maintain your balance; and (4) using your arms to help maintain your balance.

The 8 clues are whether the person cannot keep his balance, starts the test too soon, stops while walking, does not touch heel to toe, steps off the line, uses their arms to balance, performs an improper turn, and takes an incorrect number of steps.

If you “fail” a field sobriety test, you may be arrested for DUI. Once arrested, you should contact a DUI attorney iwithin the next 24 hours. The DUI attorney will evaluate whether police properly administered the test or whether a medical or physical condition could explain the failure.

The Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test, Walk & Turn Test, and The One-Leg Turn Test are currently the only three standardized field sobriety tests.
