Many donor bodies go to medical schools, where students use them to learn anatomy and practice procedures. Others, like Donor X, go to university research facilities, or any of several private companies in the US that take body donations.

All of donations go to the ARF and are allowed to decompose naturally. Once the body is skeletonized, we recover the skeletal remains and clean them further. The cleaned bones are accessioned into the UTK Donated Skeletal Collection and are labeled with the identifying number.

At any given time, the Body Farm in Tennessee may have around fifty bodies in various states of decomposition, left in various places—always at least a few feet from any of the other bodies. Over the years, Tennessee alone has housed more than 1,800 bodies—not to mention an additional 1,700 skeletons.

The University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, better known as the Body Farm and sometimes seen as the Forensic Anthropology Facility, was conceived in 1971 and established in 1972 by anthropologist William M. Bass as the first facility for the study of decomposition of human remains.

Sam Houston State University The facility is recognized by the Anatomical Board of Texas as a willed-body donor facility, and accepts human body donations for the purposes of scientific research. The facility trains students, law enforcement officials, academicians and forensic specialists.

The FARF is a 26-acre outdoor human decomposition research laboratory at Texas State's Freeman Ranch. The Texas State facility is spatially the largest facility of its kind in the world.

Once the organ and tissue recovery process has been completed, the donor's body is released to their family. The entire donation process is usually completed in 24-36 hours. The family may then proceed with any funeral arrangements.
