What is an ABC form?

An ABC data form is an assessment tool used to gather information that should evolve into a behavior implementation plan. ABC refers to: Antecedent- the events, action, or circumstances that occur before a behavior. Behavior- The behavior. Consequences- The action or response that follows the behavior.

Use “Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence” or an ABC chart to record behavior. This involves writing down what triggered the behavior (what happened just before the behavior occurred - known as the Antecedent), the actual Behavior, and what happened afterward as a result (the Consequence).

A-B-C or ABC recording is a way of collecting information to help determine the function of a child's behaviour. It does this by breaking down your observations into three elements: Antecedents (A): what happened directly before the behaviour occurred. Behaviour (B): the specific action(s) or behaviour of interest.

When the behavior occurs, write it in the Behavior (B) column. Describe what happens before the behavior occurs in the Antecedents (A) column. Describe what happens after the behavior occurs in Consequences (C) column. After you have a number of entries, look for patterns.

ABC Behavior Analysis: Examples Antecedent - Driver hears seat belt warning sound. Behavior - Driver puts on seat belt. Consequence - Driver avoids a possible injury and ticket.

ABC's of Behavior. Every instance of challenging behavior has 3 common components, an Antecedent, a Behavior, and a Consequence. These are known as the ABC's of behavior.

When should I use an ABC Behaviour Chart? An ABC analysis can be useful when you want to understand the behaviour of children who have special educational needs, learning difficulties or are Autistic. You can fill in an ABC behaviour chart as part of an informal analysis of a certain child's behaviour at any time.
