Can you retake a course even if you passed? As a general rule, most colleges only allow students who earned an unsatisfactory grade (C- or below) to retake a class. However, some colleges allow students to retake classes regardless of their grade, and others only allow students that failed to retake the class.

Typically, only the grade earned from the first taking of a course is counted in the GPA. Grades from subsequent retakings of a course are excluded from the GPA calculation.

The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes don't replace your low grades – they average in with them. That's right: your low grade won't be dropped – the retaken class grade will be added to it and averaged.

Retaking a course may raise your student's GPA (grade point average). In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA.

Students who wish to take a course more than twice must submit a petition to the appropriate committee on academic standing and appeals. In support of this petition form, students must include written approval from the undergraduate program director of the department offering the course.

Students may not repeat an individual course more than once. Undergraduate students with extenuating circumstances who wish to attempt a course for a third time must appeal for an exception.

An applicant must have a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale, where A=4.00, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.00, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2.00, C-=1.67 and D+=1.33, D=1.00, D-=.

If you don't pass a course that is required for your degree, you will have to retake the course. If you do pass but you have a low grade, then you will have to decide if it is worth it to retake the class to raise your GPA or if you would be better off taking additional courses to raise your GPA.
