Under the ongoing Covid-related forbearance, which has paused student loan payments since March 2020, the months of suspended payments can count towards student loan forgiveness under Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) as if payments were being made.

You may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance of your Direct Loans when you've made 120 qualifying payments after October 1, 2007, while employed in public service, including military service.

With forbearance, you won't have to make a payment, or you can temporarily make a smaller payment. However, you probably won't be making any progress toward forgiveness or paying back your loan. As an alternative, consider income-driven repayment.

Both allow you to temporarily postpone or reduce your federal student loan payments. The main difference is if you are in deferment, no interest will accrue to your loan balance. If you are in forbearance, interest WILL accrue on your loan balance.

If you no longer work full-time for a qualifying employer, your paused payments will not count toward PSLF. But you don't lose your eligibility for PSLF entirely.

Under the limited waiver, any payments made toward your federal loans, regardless of the payment plan you've been on, will count toward PSLF. Previously, only payments made on certain repayment plans would qualify.

COVID-19 Emergency Relief and Federal Student Aid This means your balance will increase and you'll pay more over the life of your loan. If you're pursuing loan forgiveness, any period of deferment or forbearance likely will not count toward your forgiveness requirements.
