How to fill out the Form 200.02 - Percent Compaction By Nuclear Gauge - SCDOT online

Filling out the Form 200.02 is essential for documenting percent compaction using a nuclear gauge as required by SCDOT. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step process to complete the form online effectively.

Follow the steps to fill out the Form 200.02 accurately.

  1. Click ‘Get Form’ button to access the document and open it for editing.
  2. Begin by entering the project number in the designated field at the top of the form.
  3. Next, fill in the date of the measurement, file number, and road number as applicable.
  4. Provide the relevant road information, including the contractor's name, the inspector’s details, and the nuclear gauge operator’s name.
  5. Record the material type being tested in the material section of the form.
  6. Input the SCDOT gauge number along with the daily standard count for both A.M. and P.M. as prompted on the form.
  7. For each density station number, enter the corresponding elevation from the finish grade and offset in the specified fields.
  8. Complete the density count fields by entering the relevant data for field density, wet density (calibrated), moisture percentage from the Speedy Moisture Tester, and compute the dry density using the indicated formula.
  9. Enter the weight of the mold and soil, weight of the mold, and subsequently calculate the weight of the soil by subtracting the weight of the mold from the weight of the mold and soil.
  10. Populate the one-point Proctor values including mold k factor, wet density obtained by multiplying k factor by the weight of the soil, moisture percentage, maximum dry density, and optimum moisture.
  11. Finally, calculate the percent compaction using the provided formula and enter any remarks necessary for the documentation.
  12. Ensure that the resident construction engineer's signature is obtained before finalizing the form.
  13. Once all fields are accurately completed, save your changes, and you may download, print, or share the form as needed.

The NDG's major advantage is its ability to rapidly measure density and moisture content, typically taking between 1 and 4 minutes of testing time (ASTM, 2010. (2010). Standard test method for density of soil in place by the drive-cylinder method.

A retractable rod is lowered in to a pre-drilled hole (about 2 inches below the soil profile that you are measuring) through which gamma radiation is emitted. The radiation travels through the soil and the gauge detector reads the radiation that remains or the radiation that was not absorbed by the soil.

The Nuclear Gauge is specifically designed to measure the moisture content and density of soils, aggregates, cement and lime treated materials, and to measure the density of Bituminous Concrete. It offers the inspector a method of obtaining fast, accurate, in-place measurement of density and moisture.

Precision for a typical gauge for a one minute reading at the time of manufacture is ±0.5 pcf at backscatter and ±0.25 pcf at 6" direct transmission depth.

The radiation travels through the soil and the gauge detector reads the radiation that remains or the radiation that was not absorbed by the soil. Therefore, the detector count is inversely proportional to the material density or, the lower the detector count, the higher the density.

This test method describes the procedure for determining the in-place density and moisture of earthwork through the use of a nuclear gauge. The density of the material shall be determined by direct transmission and the moisture content shall be determined by backscatter.

The Nuclear Gauge is specifically designed to measure the moisture content and density of soils, aggregates, cement and lime treated materials, and to measure the density of Bituminous Concrete. It offers the inspector a method of obtaining fast, accurate, in-place measurement of density and moisture.

A lab technician will start by sifting and moisture conditioning of the soil. Once the soil is prepped the soil will go into a cylindrical mold to be compacted at various moisture contents and weighted. The test is to see how much of the material can be compacted into the same volume at the various amounts of moisture.
