The state of Washington's Shared Leave Program allows time off accruing employees to donate their accrued time off to another state employee who is experiencing a severe, extraordinary, or life-threatening health crisis, for parental leave, pregnancy disability, or other qualifying circumstance.

Leave donation or leave sharing programs allow employees to donate accrued paid time off (PTO), vacation or sick leave to a general pool to be used by fellow employees who experience medical emergencies or who are affected by major disasters and have exhausted all paid leave available to them.

At least 112 hours (14 days) of vacation leave is provided yearly to permanent, probationary, trainee and provisional employees. As length of service increases, the amount of leave earned increases. Leave is prorated for part-time employees. The Vacation Leave Policy is prorated for part-time employees.

A leave-sharing or PTO donation program allows employees to share their accrued PTO or other leave with fellow employees who have exhausted their leave in times of illness, emergency, or other hardship.

Eligible workers in Washington can take up to 12 weeks of medical leave or family leave, or up to 16 to 18 weeks of combined medical and family leave in a year.

An employer-sponsored leave-sharing program allows an employee to donate accrued hours of paid vacation, or personal and potentially sick leave for the benefit of other employees who are in need of taking more leave than they have available.

Annual leave and personal/carer's leave While not specifically addressed in the Act, an employer would not be permitted to transfer any accrued annual leave or personal/carer's leave from one employee to another, even with an employee's agreement.

An employee may donate leave to an employee who has been approved to receive voluntary shared leave because of a medical condition of the employee or of a member of the employee's immediate family that will require the employee's absence for a prolonged period of time.
