The regular base year period consists of the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the week you file an initial claim.

The annual claim period, or benefit year, is 365 days from the date of your claim. If you return to work before you collect all the benefits in your claim, and then become unemployed again before the one-year anniversary of your claim, you should immediately reopen your claim.

The weekly benefit rate is capped at a maximum amount based on the state minimum wage. For 2022, the maximum weekly benefit rate is $804. For 2023, the maximum weekly benefit rate is $830.

All states use a base period, or base year, to determine whether laid off workers have earned enough wages to qualify for UI benefits. A base period is typically four calendar quarters. (The calendar quarters are January through March, April through June, July through September, and October through December.)

The wage base will increase to $20,400 in 2023 (from $17,000 in 2022), $23,800 in 2024, $27,200 in 2025, and $30,600 in 2026. Each year thereafter, the wage base will be adjusted by the change in average weekly earnings.

For example, if you worked 40 weeks during your base year period, with a weekly benefit rate of $400, you would use the following calculation: $400 x 26 = $10,400. Your maximum benefit amount would be $10,400. The maximum total benefit amount that anyone can receive in a benefit year is $21,580 ($830 x 26).

How do I end my claim to stop getting benefits? If you have returned to work and no longer need unemployment benefits, you do not need to contact us. To stop receiving benefits, simply stop certifying for weekly benefits.
