Propane and natural gas are both fossil fuels, and both are largely produced domestically. For homeowners, the main difference between the two is that propane is compressed into a liquid form and either sold in portable canisters, or delivered via truck to a permanent storage tank on their property.

It is a gas at standard temperature and pressure, but compressible to a transportable liquid. A by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, it is commonly used as a fuel in domestic and industrial applications and in low-emissions public transportation.

Propane can exist in both gaseous and liquid form. At room temperature and atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi) it is a gas. When tanks or containers are filled with propane they are pressurized to 100-200 psi, and the increase in pressure causes propane to condense and form a liquid.

The Missouri Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned electric, natural gas, steam, water and sewer utilities in Missouri.

Propane is a three-carbon alkane gas (C3H8). It is stored under pressure inside a tank as a colorless, odorless liquid. As pressure is released, the liquid propane vaporizes and turns into gas that is used in combustion.

These must be placed at least 25 feet from a building or property line. In addition to following the 10- and 25-feet rules, all propane tanks that receive refill deliveries must be at least 5 feet from your driveway.

Vapour (or vapor in American spelling) is the more technically correct term for LPG, as it is in gaseous and liquid equilibrium at room temperature. It can be turned back into a liquid by increasing the pressure on it without reducing the temperature. A gas has one defined state at room temperature.

Propane is commonly used for space and water heating, for cooking, and as fuel for engine applications such as forklifts, farm irrigation engines, fleet vehicles, and buses; however, its applications are rapidly growing due to new technology developments. When used as vehicle fuel, propane is known as propane autogas.
