An After Action Report (AAR) is a written report that documents a unit's actions for historical purposes and provides key observations and lessons learned. It is typically submitted after a training mission, combat operation or other mission.

The after action review (AAR) is a simple method for facilitating an assessment of organisational performance by bringing together a team to discuss a task, event, activity or project in an open and honest fashion.

There are basically two types of military AARs—formal and informal. Formal AARs require more detailed planning, preparation, and resources. They are normally scheduled and conducted as a part of external and internal evaluations.

This report will detail the events of the drill or incident itself, how your business responded, what went well or poorly, and then lay out an action plan for improving your preparedness and response for next time.

The four steps in the execution sequence of an after action review are planning, preparation, conduct, and follow-up.

Beginning—The AAR will seek to answer five key questions: 1) what was supposed to happen, 2) what was the reality, 3) what went well, 4) what did not go well, and 5) what should be changed for next time.

The four focal points of the AAR: what was expected to occur, what really happened, what went wrong and why did it go wrong, what went well and why did this go well.

Step 1: Planning the AAR. Commanders are responsible for training their units. ... Step 2: Preparing the AAR. Preparation is the key to the effective execution of any plan. ... Step 3: Conducting the AAR. ... Step 4: Follow-up.
