How the TRS Plan Works. The TRS Plan is a defined benefit pension plan. Your retirement benefit is based upon on a predetermined formula, using your length of service and average monthly salary based on your highest 24 months of earnings.

APERS operates what is known as a “defined benefits” pension plan whereas most private retirement plans are “defined contribution” plans. The basic difference is what each plan promises its participants. A defined benefit plan (APERS) specifies exactly how much retirement income employees will get once they retire.

Defined benefit plans provide a fixed, pre-established benefit for employees at retirement. Employees often value the fixed benefit provided by this type of plan. On the employer side, businesses can generally contribute (and therefore deduct) more each year than in defined contribution plans.

A typical multiplier for defined benefit plans is 2%. So, if you work 30 years, and your final average salary is $75,000, then your pension benefit would be calculated like this: That $45,000 becomes your guaranteed lifetime annual income.

The USG Retirement Plan is designed to provide a monthly income benefit for life or a lump sum benefit based on your pay, age and years of benefit service with the Company. The plan is a contributory defined benefit cash balance plan with full vesting after 3 years participation.

Defined Benefit (DB) Plan Provides a pension benefit formula of 1% x years of service x highest average salary (30 years = approximately 29% of salary as a monthly benefit*). Vesting for the DB plan is 10 years.
