There are two levels of licensure in Arkansas. The first is the Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC), this license is meant to be a provisional license that one obtains in order to be able to fulfill their supervised work experience requirements to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

After obtaining their license, counselors in Arkansas become Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs). Before applying for their professional licensure, counselors who are practicing under supervision are referred to as Licensed Associate Counselors (LACs).

Act 244 of 1997 of the state of Arkansas provides for the licensing of associate and professional counselors. A person completing an approved master's degree or higher program, with a minimum of 60 graduate hours, may be licensed in Arkansas to provide counseling services to the public.
