A Simple Rule Three feet of a ladder must extend above the edge of an excavation for proper ingress/egress. At a depth of 4 feet, a ladder or other means of ingress/egress is required. At a depth of 5 feet or more, proper shoring or sloping techniques shall be utilized.

OSHA requires employers to provide ladders, steps, ramps, or other safe means of egress for workers working in trench excavations 4 feet (1.22 meters) or deeper. The means of egress must be located so as not to require workers to travel more than 25 feet (7.62 meters) laterally within the trench.

Excavations. Each employee at the edge of a well, pit, shaft, and similar excavation 6 feet (1.8 m) or more in depth shall be protected from falling by guardrail systems, fences, barricades, or covers.

OSHA defines an excavation as any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the Earth's surface formed by earth removal. A trench is defined as a narrow excavation (in relation to its length) made below the surface of the ground.

OSHA standards require safe access and egress to all excavations, including ladders, steps, ramps or other safe means of exit for employees working in trench excavations four feet or deeper. These devices must be located within 25 feet of all workers. Keep heavy equipment away from trench edges.

5-4-3-2-1 Rule: Any trench greater than 4 feet must have a ladder for exit and egress. Remember that the ladder must extend at least 3 feet out of the trench in order to allow for easy access. Don't forget to keep all spoil piles at least 2 feet back from the excavation or trench.

Trenches 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep or greater require a protective system unless the excavation is made entirely in stable rock. If less than 5 feet deep, a competent person may determine that a protective system is not required.
