REQUIREMENTS FOR OSTDS REPAIR PERMITS If the drainfield will exceed 1000 sq. ft., the domestic sewage flow exceeds 2500 gpd, or the commercial sewage flow exceeds 1000 gpd, then an engineer shall submit detailed system construction plans for OSTDS.

A minimum lot size of one acre of upland is required for the use of a septic system within Water Resource Protection Areas as shown on the Hillsborough County Resource Protection Map.

Permits for OSTDS, including septic tank systems, are issued by the Environmental Health Section of the Florida Department of Health's local county health department. Please note that many counties have local ordinances that may exceed state requirements for OSTDS.

A septic system can last decades, from 15 years to 20 years for a steel septic tank and up to more than 50 years for a drainfield.

Contractors must complete a minimum of six classroom hours of approved training for renewal each year. Most septic tank contracting services require a certificate of authorization. The structure of a business determines whether a certificate of authorization is required.
