Finally, some states don't tax any income, including military benefits: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Combat pay is income earned while stationed in a designated combat zone in service to the U.S. military. Combat pay is nontaxable for most service members, and all service members can exclude at least some of their combat pay from their taxable income.

You can file online or complete and mail Form M99, Credit for Military Service in a Combat Zone, for the year you served. You file Form M99 separately from your income tax return. To receive this credit, you must: Include required documentation (see “Documentation Needed” on this page) with your form.

If you are not a Minnesota resident, Minnesota will not tax your military pay or your spouse's wages in most cases. You are not required to file a Minnesota return unless you have other income taxable to Minnesota and exceeding the state minimum filing requirement.

Calculation of Minnesota's individual income tax starts with federal taxable income. As a result, military pay that is exempt from taxation at the federal level, such as combat pay and hazardous duty pay, is also exempt at the state level.

Minnesota Taxes on Military Retired Pay: Minnesota does not tax military retired pay. To be eligible the Service member's retired pay must have been included in their federal adjusted gross income.

Seven states tax military retirement pay fully and offer little to no tax benefits for retirement income: California, Georgia, Montana, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia....Eight states have no state income tax whatsoever: Alaska. Florida. Nevada. South Dakota. Tennessee. Texas. Washington. Wyoming.
