Construction of RCC columns involve following four steps: Column layouts. Column reinforcement work. Column formwork. Pouring of concrete.

A column is a vertical structural member intended to transfer a compressive load. For example, a column might transfer loads from a ceiling, floor or roof slab or from a beam, to a floor or foundations.

The design of columns involves determining the appropriate dimensions and reinforcement required to support vertical loads in a structure. It includes considerations such as material strength, column height, cross-sectional shape, and the structural forces acting on the column.

It is estimated that 95% of all columns in buildings are tied. 1: Tied column. 2: Spiral Column. 3: Composite column. 4: Axially loaded column. 5: Column with uniaxial eccentric loading. 6: Column with biaxial eccentric loading. 7: Short column. 8: Long column.

Columns can be divided into different types based on the shape of their cross-section. In this category, the most common types of columns are square/rectangular, circular columns, L-type columns, T-type columns and Y-type columns.

Column sections can be rectangular, round, square, octagonal, hexagonal as per requirements. Generally tied columns may be square and rectangular while spiral columns are circular. Circular columns are used when higher elevation is needed like in piles, bridges pillars.

The size is determined by the required bearing area on foundation; and the required thickness by the excess overhang. Depending upon loading conditions and to achieve economy the column bases are classified into two types, viz. Slab base and Gusseted slab base.

Examples of 5 types of classical columns: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and composite .
