In North Carolina, adopting a highway means that individuals or groups volunteer to maintain a designated stretch of road. This program encourages community involvement and environmental stewardship by promoting regular litter clean-up and road maintenance. By completing an Adopt A Road Form, you can become part of this impactful initiative. It’s a meaningful way to improve your local environment and engage with your neighbors.

The adoption process usually begins with researching local programs to ensure you understand the requirements. Next, you will fill out an Adopt A Road Form, providing necessary details about your commitment. After that, your application will be reviewed, followed by a training session to prepare volunteers. Once trained, you can begin your clean-up efforts, and finally, celebrate your achievements with your community. Each step solidifies your role in this important initiative.

The adopt a highway program connects volunteers with specific sections of road to maintain. Participants commit to cleaning their designated area several times a year, which helps improve the environment and aesthetic of the road. To get started, you will need to complete an Adopt A Road Form, which facilitates your involvement in this community-focused initiative. This program fosters collaboration between local governments and citizens, making it a win-win for everyone.

Adopting a highway offers several benefits, both for you and your community. By completing the Adopt A Road Form, you contribute to a cleaner environment and promote community pride. Additionally, this initiative can enhance your organization's visibility and reputation, as your name may appear on signage along the adopted roadway. It's a fulfilling way to make a positive impact while enjoying the outdoors.

To file an adoption, first, you need to complete the Adopt A Road Form provided by your local government. This form typically requires details about the road you wish to adopt and your commitment to maintain it. After filling out the form, submit it to the appropriate authorities for approval. Once approved, you can begin your journey in caring for the community road.

To adopt a state highway, a business, community organization or individual must file an application online (click here) requesting permission to adopt a segment of state highway. Once the application is approved, the applicant must execute an Agreement with the Clean Communities Council.

This program is FREE to join and requires a volunteer to pick up litter (and recyclables) along both sides of an adopted road segment (in the right-of-way), including bus stops and shelters.

Non-profit groups interested in adopting a road segment are exempt from the initial fee of $550. However, due to declining resources, no sign will be provided.

The take rate is pretty solid. TxDOT says about 8% of the state's roads—some 6,800 miles—are cleaned up by Adopt-a-Highway volunteers in roughly 3,400 different groups. The program saves the state some $5 million in highway maintenance costs each year, per the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Fill out an online application below and your local Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator will contact you to start the adoption process or call 866-ADOPTAHWY or (866) 236-7864. For more information on the Adopt-A-Highway Program, please visit Caltrans' Adopt-A-Highway Program page.
