There is no treatment for EIA. Because infected animals become lifelong carriers they must be permanently isolated and quarantined or euthanized.

'Coggins' is a common name for a blood test that is used to screen horses, mules and donkeys for a possibly fatal disease - Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).

Testing is performed by serology via the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test, commonly known as the Coggins test (named after its developer Dr. Leroy Coggins), or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A positive result using either test indicates the presence of EIA-specific antibodies in the blood.

This test involves an agar gel immunodiffusion reaction and detects antibodies produced by the horse after infection with the EIA virus. A positive result indicates previous or current infection with the EIA virus.

Horses positive for EIA are lifelong carriers and pose a risk to any other horse they may be around. Therefore, EIA carriers must either be permanently quarantined and kept at least 200 yards away from other horses or euthanized.

Horses generally recover from either the acute or chronic form of this clinical disease, but will remain lifelong carriers of the virus. EIA virus is found in the blood of all infected horses, even the inapparent carriers.
