What does “Non Homestead” mean? Non-‐homestead represents industrial, commercial and some agricultural property and “second homes.” It does not include a family's primary residence.

What is a principal residence exemption? A principal residence exemption exempts an owner's principal residence from the tax levied by a local school district for operating purposes, up to 18 mills. (MCL 211.7cc). A principal residence exemption is not an income tax credit.

MCL 211.7dd(c) defines a “principal residence” as the one place where a person has his or her true, fixed, and permanent home, to which, whenever absent he or she intends to return.

You were a resident of Michigan for at least six months during the year. You own or are contracted to pay rent and occupy a Michigan homestead on which property taxes were levied. If you own your home, your taxable value is $143,000 or less. Your total household resources are $63,000 or less.
