The SFHDF is used by Federally regulated lending institutions when making, increasing, extending, renewing or purchasing a loan for the purpose of determining whether flood insurance is required and available.

The Standard Flood Hazard Determination Form is required for all federally backed loans and is used by lenders to determine the flood risk for their building loans. The form is authorized by the National Flood Insurance Reform Act of 1994 and is imposed on lenders by their regulatory entities, not by FEMA.

Q: What's the main difference between NFIP and private flood insurance? A: The NFIP is a federal government program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Private flood insurance, on the other hand, is written by private insurance carriers who are free to offer as much coverage as they want.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released a revised Standard Flood Hazard Determination Form, FEMA Form 81-93, OCT 02, which replaces FEMA Form 81-93, OCT 98. The form is used for determining whether real property offered as collateral on a loan is located in a special flood hazard area.

The emergency program is the initial phase of a community's participation in the NFIP. Only limited amounts of coverage are available under this program. The regular program is the final phase of a community's participation in the NFIP.

The National Flood Insurance Program covers direct physical damage by flood to your building and/or personal property, also known as contents. The Standard Flood Insurance Policy (SFIP) is a single-peril (flood) policy that pays only for flood damage to your insured property, up to the policy limit.

1. Dwelling Form. The policy form used to insure a building designed for use as a residence for no more than 4 families or a single-family unit in a residential building under a condominium form of ownership. This form is also used to insure residential contents in any building.

The NFIP is often referred to as a “three-legged stool”, meaning there are 3 different parts that help support the program – Flood Insurance, Floodplain Development Regulations, and Floodplain Maps.
