GET A PERMIT. A permit is required from the Tennessee Division of Forestry between October 15 to May 15 where local restrictions do not supercede. Notify your local fire department and neighbors to let them know your plans to burn. Do not burn on windy days. Stay abreast of changing weather conditions.

It may be okay to burn leaves, branches, tree limbs, twigs, lawn clippings, woody vegetation, yard trimmings, clean unpainted, uncoated wood or untreated lumber. Check your local and/or other state ordinances. Improper out-door burning can lead to fines up to $25,000.

For broadcast burning applications such as forestry (understory, site prep), agricultural (crop stubble, field clearing), wildlife (habitat, warm season grasses), land clearing (dozer piles, windrows) or other burning, call (877) 350-BURN (2876) to speak with a Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry ...

The only burn permits allowed to be issued by the Texas Air Control Board must come through the Fire Marshal's Office. Only tree and brush trimmings are allowed to be burned and the material and area must be inspected by the Fire Marshal or his representative prior to issuance of a permit.

State law requires a permit for open-air burning from October 15 through May 15. Permits are free. You may obtain a permit online for leaf and brush piles. For broadcast burning for forestry, agricultural, or land clearing operations, call your local Division of Forestry office in your county for a permit.

For large scale broadcast burning applications, call (877) 350-BURN (2876) to request a permit from a Division of Forestry representative. Permits issued by phone can only be obtained during state business hours Monday thru Friday 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m. in your local time zone.
