Business rates in England, or non-domestic rates, are a tax on the occupation of non-domestic property (National Non-Domestic Rates; NNDR). Rates are a property tax with ancient roots that was formerly used to fund local services that was formalised with the Poor Law 1572 and superseded by the Poor Law of 1601.

Small business rate relief (SSBR) is a national discount scheme administered by the council on behalf of the Government. It is awarded on a sliding scale depending on the size of your Rateable Value (RV). The maximum amount of discount is 100%.

The government announced in the October 2021 Budget that eligible ratepayers will receive a discount of 50% on their business rates bills for the year 2022/23, up to a maximum of £110,000. Relief will be provided until 31 March 2023 to ratepayers occupying eligible occupied retail, hospitality and leisure properties.

In most circumstances occupiers of properties that are entered in the Valuation Office Agency's (VOA) business rates lists must pay. Business rates are charged on most commercial (non-domestic) properties such as shops, offices, pubs, warehouses, factories, holiday rental homes or guest houses.

What you'll get. If you're eligible, you could get 75% off your business rates bills for the 2023 to 2024 tax year (1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024). The most you can get in each tax year is £110,000 per business.

Some properties are eligible for discounts from the local council on their business rates. This is called 'business rates relief'. Rates relief is handled differently if your property is in Scotland, your property is in Wales or your property is in Northern Ireland.
