The AHU is a large metal box containing separate ventilators for supply and exhaust, heating coil, cooling coil, heating/cooling recovery system, air filter racks or chambers, sound attenuators, mixing chamber, and dampers.

AHUs usually have a Cooling Coil that is basically a back-and-forth series of pipes that have metal fins attached to them, and Chilled Water or Low Pressure Refrigerant passes through the pipes. As the air passes over the pipes and between the fins it gets cooled down by a measurable amount.

An air handler, or air handling unit (often abbreviated to AHU), is a device used to regulate and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system.

When this maintenance is factored in, an air handling unit will last for 25 years plus. Without any maintenance the estimate would be 1-5 year lifespan. As long as you are maintaining your air handling unit well — with regular maintenance and servicing — the system should last a long time.

Air handler maintenance checklist Check the unit for noise and vibration. Clean filters. Drain and clean condensation pan. Lubricate and grease motor and blower bearing.

There are two main types of air handling unit — the 'blow-through' and the 'draw-through'. The blow-through AHU has a fan which blows the air through the mixing box, cooling coil and filters before it goes to the ducting network. The draw-through AHU can be vertical or horizontal.

The air handling unit (AHU) is the heart of central air conditioning. It collects outside air and room air, removes dust and other particles from the collected air, adjusts the temperature and humidity and then supplies comfortable and refreshing air-conditioned air into the rooms through ducts.

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a configuration of components arranged in modules that are fully adaptable to the specific requirements of the intended application. These units manage the air and modify its qualities and properties of temperature, humidity and quality.

AHU, which is Air Handling Unit is an appliance used to circulate air. HVAC is Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning system. HVAC is the central unit to which AHU is connected. AHU is only a part of HVAC and as such there is hardly any difference between then two.
