But it is his role in the history of Ethiopia for which Menelik II is most revered to this day, for it was he who defeated a European nation – Italy – on the field of battle, to defend Ethiopian independence.

Imperialism affected Nigeria in a negative way due to Britain taking over and controlling all of Nigeria, Nigeria's loss in their culture and land, and Nigerians being forced to become slaves to the Britains.

Under the leadership of Emperor Menelik, Ethiopia resisted European attempts to colonize all of Ethiopia. Ethiopia won a decisive victory over Italy at the Battle of Adowa, December 1895. During the battle, approximately 4,000 Italian soldiers were killed.

The British kept their control over Nigeria via indirect rule, which meant that local leaders would govern the area under orders of the British.

Ethiopia was able to be successful in resisting imperialism because they allied with other local kingdoms and with Russia, who supplied them with weaponry to defeat the Italian army at the Battle of Adwa.

Why was Ethiopia able to successfully resist European rule? Emperor Menelik II took advantage of European rivalries to create a supply of weapons. He declared war and defeated the Italians.

On the first day of March 124 years ago, traditional warriors, farmers and pastoralists as well as women defeated a well-armed Italian army in the northern town of Adwa in Ethiopia. The outcome of this battle ensured Ethiopia's independence, making it the only African country never to be colonized.

Nigerian colonial legacy: neo-colonialism Colonialism in Nigeria was a practice of domination in which the British imperial state subjugated the kingdoms that were amalgamated in 1914, to become present-day Nigeria.
