Contaminated Sharps: Means any contaminated object that can penetrate the skin including, but not limited to, needles and broken glass. Universal / Standard Precautions: Is an approach to infection control to reduce the likelihood of exposure by standardizing the manner in which a task is performed.

On December 6, 1991, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promulgated the Bloodborne Pathogens standard. This standard is designed to protect workers from the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV).

How are needlestick and sharps injuries recorded? All wounds caused by contaminated or potentially contaminated sharp objects must initially be recorded on the OSHA log as injuries. If the worker did not miss any time from work or require job restrictions or a job transfer, then the “other recordable” category is used.

You must record all work-related needlestick injuries and cuts from sharp objects that are contaminated with another person's blood or other potentially infectious material (as defined by 29 CFR 1910.1030). You must enter the case on the OSHA 300 Log as an injury.

Sharps injuries must be reported to HSE under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) if: an employee is injured by a sharp known to be contaminated with a blood-borne virus (BBV), eg hepatitis B or C or HIV.

Paragraph (h)(5)(i) now states, "The employer shall establish and maintain a sharps injury log for the recording of percutaneous injuries from contaminated sharps. The information in the sharps injury log shall be recorded and maintained in such manner as to protect the confidentiality of the injured employee.

What should you do if you're exposed? Wash needlesticks and cuts with soap and water. Flush splashes to nose, mouth, or skin with water. Irrigate eyes with clean water, saline, or sterile wash. Report all exposures promptly to ensure that you receive appropriate followup care.

If you suffer an injury from a sharp which may be contaminated: Encourage the wound to gently bleed, ideally holding it under running water. Wash the wound using running water and plenty of soap. Don't scrub the wound while you are washing it.
