Get Individual Accommodation Plan

While they are similar in some respects, they are different plans. They both stem from Federal Law: IEPs are governed by Special Education Law/Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA); 504 plan is governed by the Civil Rights-Rehabilitation Act. Both require the child to have a documented disability.

The basic difference between an IEP and a 504 plan can be summed up in one sentence: both plans provide for accommodations, but only an IEP provides for specialized instruction for students in grades K–12, while a 504 plan can serve students at both the K–12 and college levels.

Accommodations are typically grouped into four categories: presentation, response, setting, and timing and scheduling.

504 plans, in ance with California law, are designed to remove any barriers limiting a disabled child's ability to receive an education and provide the necessary support the child needs.

IEP – Individualized Education Program – The IEP describes the plan for the student's educational program, including current performance levels, student goals, and the educational placement and other services the student will receive.

Goals and scope: 504 plans are focused on accommodations and removing barriers in a general education environment. IEPs provide specially designed instruction to allow the student to participate and be successful in the curriculum.

504 Plan Defined The 504 Plan is a plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.
