The electron multiplication takes place along a series of electrodes called dynodes that have the property of emitting more than one electron when struck by a single electron that has been accelerated from a previous dynode.…

Normally if the mass spectrometer is not performing up to specs, and the multiplier is more than one year old, the operator will replace the multiplier. On most mass spectrometers which use autotuning programs to adjust electron multiplier voltage, the tune voltage will increase with age.

An electron multiplier is a vacuum-tube structure that multiplies incident charges. In a process called secondary emission, a single electron can, when bombarded on secondary-emissive material, induce emission of roughly 1 to 3 electrons.

There are two basic forms of electron multipliers that are commonly used in mass spectrometry: the discrete-dynode electron multiplier and the contin- uous-dynode electron multiplier (often referred to as a channel electron multiplier or CEM). All ETP electron multipliers are of the discrete-dynode type (Figure 3).

The Faraday cup utilizes a physical principle ing to which the electrical charges delivered to the inner surface of a hollow conductor are redistributed around its outer surface due to mutual self-repelling of charges of the same sign – a phenomenon discovered by Faraday.

The dynodes are so arranged that the electric fields between them cause the electrons emitted by each dynode to strike the next with an energy of a few hundred eV. As a result of secondary emission, the number of electrons increases from dynode to dynode, giving the required multiplication.
