(a) The takeoff and landing area shall have a minimum length and width (or diameter if circular) of 1-1/2 times the overall length of the largest helicopter intended to use the facility. (b) There shall be an obstacle-free safety area surrounding the takeoff and landing area.

Although planning consent is not normally required for helicopter operations from private property, the construction of hard standing e.g. a concrete landing surface as well as the installation of landing lights and the of a hangar or barn in which to house the helicopter, may be regarded as development by the ...

With few exceptions, helicopters can land their aircraft just about anywhere they want to. There are some FAA restrictions, of course, and you'll have to check any state or local restrictions as well, but as a general rule, helicopters are allowed to land almost anywhere.

In general, helicopters can land anywhere they can safely fit. However, local & regional aviation regulations can prevent a helicopter from landing at a pilot's desired location, especially in urban areas. In an emergency, a helicopter is allowed to land anywhere to ensure the safety of its occupants.

Basic Layout The FATO must be at least 1.5 times the overall length of the helicopter. The width of the safety area must be at least 0.33 times the rotor diameter, but not less than 20 ft. (6 m). At least two approach/departure paths, with one aligned in the direction of the predominant wind, are required.

Locate a flat area that is of sufficient size for the type of helicopter you are expecting. Type 1 – Clear and level touchdown pad measuring 30 feet by 30 feet; safety circle measuring 110 feet in diameter. Type 2 – Clear and level touchdown pad measuring 20 feet by 20 feet; safety circle measuring 90 feet in diameter.

The FAA doesn't prohibit helicopters from operating in most places, so you should be able to land one in your backyard if you can do so safely. And no law says you have to build a helipad to land.

Any owner of a piece of ground may use it as a helicopter landing facility without any kind of permission, provided the following conditions are met. The following document provides basic advice for setting up an unlicensed helicopter site including planning permission, siting and marking.
