For applications in biomedical engineering, microcontact printing has been a developed method for printing patterns of biomolecules onto flat surfaces with high resolution (100 nm) [12].

Microcontact printing has been used to create microscale patterns of adhesive biomolecules, like collagen and fibronectin among others, in cell-repellent substrates (Wheeldon et al. 2011). This results in cellular arrays in which cell growth is restricted to the islands of adhesive materials (Peerani et al. 2009a).

The most important microfabrication techniques are photolithography, soft lithography, film deposition, etching, and bonding. Photolithography is used to transfer a user-generated shape onto a material through the selective exposure of a light sensitive polymer.

In a plastic cup, weigh 10 parts (by weight, ~ 20 g) of Sylgard 184 pre-polymer and 1 part (~ 2g) of curing agent. Mix the above vigorously for a couple of minutes until the entire mixture is filled with bubbles. Place the cup in a desiccator to degas (allow bubbles to rise out) for 20 minutes.

Once you feel you are ready to apply the ink to your fabric, unleash your creative side and have fun! Step 1: Apply fabric paint evenly to stamp with foam applicator or brush. Step 2: evenly stamp your impression. Step 3: Repeat the process to create a pattern!

The key steps involved in microcontact printing (µCP) are (1) fabrication of stamps with pre-designed pattern, (2) inking the stamp with desired bio-molecules and (3) transferring the bio-molecues onto the desired substrate.

Soft lithography is a technique for fabricating or replicate structures using elastomeric stamps, molds and the conformable photo-mask. It is called soft because it uses elastomeric materials most notably polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (Zhang et al., 2019).
