The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has established lead standards for workers in general industrial and construction jobs. Both standards define minimum safety precautions, including regular testing, that employers must provide for employees exposed to lead on the job.

The amount of lead in blood is referred to as the blood lead level, which is measured in micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood (μg/dL). CDC currently uses a blood lead reference value (BLRV) of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter to identify children with blood lead levels that are higher than most children's levels.

On May 1, 2022, MDHHS lowered the definition of elevated blood lead level to 3.5 µg/dL or greater, based on an updated BLRV from CDC. Elevated blood lead measures are available for all years on the MiTracking data portal by: 3.5 µg/ dL (new BLRV)*

All children enrolled in Medicaid, regardless of whether coverage is funded through title XIX or XXI, are required to receive blood lead screening tests at ages 12 months and 24 months. In addition, any child between 24 and 72 months with no record of a previous blood lead screening test must receive one.

In October 2021, CDC lowered the blood lead reference value (BLRV) to 3.5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) to identify children with higher levels of lead in their blood compared to most children. Capillary screening results at or above 3.5 μg/dL should be confirmed with blood drawn by venipuncture.

CDC recommends that healthcare providers use a venous draw for confirmatory BLL screening....Table 1: Recommended Schedule for Obtaining a Confirmatory Venous Sample. Blood Lead Level (μg/dL)Time to Confirmation Testing**≥3.5–9Within 3 months10–19Within 1 month20–44Within 2 weeks≥45Within 48 hours
