Human studies have clearly established that inhaled chromium (VI) is a human carcinogen, resulting in an increased risk of lung cancer. Animal studies have shown chromium (VI) to cause lung tumors via inhalation exposure.

Chromium(III) is poorly absorbed in humans; most dietary chromium is excreted in the urine. The threshold for acute oral toxicity is 1900–3300 mg/kg.

When hexavalent chromium enters the bloodstream, it damages blood cells by causing oxidation reactions. This oxidative damage can lead to hemolysis and, ultimately, kidney and liver failure. Patients might be treated with dialysis. The median lethal dose of hexavalent chromium is 50–150 mg/kg.

Symptoms may include runny nose, sneezing, coughing, itching and a burning sensation. Repeated or prolonged exposure can cause sores to develop in the nose and result in nosebleeds. If the damage is severe, the nasal septum (wall sep- arating the nasal passages) develops a hole in it (perforation).

When inhaled, chromium compounds are respiratory tract irritants and can cause pulmonary sensitization. Chronic inhalation of Cr(VI) compounds increases the risk of lung, nasal, and sinus cancer. Severe dermatitis and usually painless skin ulcers can result from contact with Cr(VI) compounds.
