A notary public must have a seal of office to attach to notarial acts and should indicate below his or her signature the expiration date of his or her commission (§26-1-60).

The maximum fees that may be charged by a South Carolina notary public for various notarial acts are listed below: Acknowledgment: $5 per signature. Oath or affirmation without a signature: $5 per person. Jurat: $5 per signature.

A notary journal is a record of acts performed by a notary public, who is a commissioned public servant. If an act is called into question, a properly maintained notary journal will assist in determining critical facts about the act in question.

California requires its Notaries to keep all completed journals as long as they maintains a current Notary commission. California Notaries whose commissions end without being renewed must turn in their journals within 30 days to the county clerk's office where their oath of office is on file.

South Carolina notaries public are not required to keep notary journals. However, it is STRONGLY encouraged. It is a good idea to have a record of all notarial acts performed in case questions arise related to the execution of a document.

A notary public shall have a seal of office, which must be affixed to his notarial acts. He shall indicate below his signature the date of expiration of his commission. The absence of the seal of office or date of expiration does not render his notarial acts invalid if his official title is affixed to it.

The application must be signed with pen and ink and the signature of the applicant must be acknowledged by a person authorized to administer oaths (§26-1-40). The date of your signature and the date of the notarization must match. You cannot notarize your own signature on the application or at any other time.

Requirements to be a Notary in South Carolina Be at least 18 years old. Be a resident of South Carolina. Be a registered voter in South Carolina. Be able to read and write English. Not be under a court order declaring mental incompetence. Not be serving a term of imprisonment for conviction of a crime.
