The history of Ukrainian nationality can be traced back to the kingdom of Kievan Rus' of the 9th to 12th centuries. It was the predecessor state to what would eventually become the Eastern Slavic nations of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine.

Freedom is the key trait of Ukraine's identity as a political nation. Ukrainian political culture is based upon anti-tyrannical, democratic and republican values. Most Russians tend to approve of their tsar; Ukrainians identify with opposition to him. Within politics they see a social contract.

The modern response "Heroiam slava!" (Glory to the heroes!) appeared in the 1930s among members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). The greeting "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!" later became the official slogan of Stepan Bandera's OUN-B in April 1941.

Ukrainians (Ukrainian: Українці, romanized: Ukraintsi, pronounced [ʊkrɐˈjinʲts⁽ʲ⁾i]) are an East Slavic ethnic group native to Ukraine. The native language of the Ukrainians is Ukrainian.

Ukrainian nationalism draws upon a single national identity of culture, ethnicity, geographic location, language, politics (or the government), religion, traditions and belief in a shared singular history, that dates back to the 9th century.

Ukrainian nationalism refers to the promotion of the unity of Ukrainians as a people and the promotion of the identity of Ukraine as a nation state.

Among them are Avgustyn Voloshyn, Stepan Bandera (annulled), Volodymyr Ivasyuk, Vasyl Stus, liquidators Mykola Vashchuk, Vasyl Ihnatenko, Oleksandr Lelechko, Mykola Tytenok, Volodymyr Tishura. There are 17 heroes of Ukraine who previously were awarded the Hero of Socialist Labour.
