Legally Required Standby Systems (NEC Article 701) are required by codes to illuminate or to power equipment that is not categorized as requiring emergency power, but whose failure could create hazards, hinder rescue or hamper firefighting operations. These systems are known as Level 2, or less critical systems.

The requirements for ITM of fire pumps are found in NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.

Just like NFPA 5000, NFPA 101 Chapter 11 (special structures and high-rise buildings) requires that fire pumps be part of the standby system and comply with NEC 701.

NFPA 20 Section 9.2. 1 requires an electric motor-driven fire pump be provided with a normal source of power as a continually available source. NFPA 20 Section 9.3. 2 requires at least one alternate source of power be provided where the normal source is not reliable.

During a fire pump test, inspection teams will test the system suction and discharge pressure, pump packing glands, discharge valves, gland nuts, and other components. Teams will also carefully evaluate the system for noises, vibration, leaks, and other signs of damage.

The emergency fire pump must be of a fixed independent driven power operated pump. The capacity of the pump must not be less than 40% of the total capacity of the fire pumps as detailed under " capacity of the fire pumps" shown below.

Informational Note: Legally required standby systems are typically installed to serve loads, such as heating and refrigeration systems, communications systems, ventilation and smoke removal systems, sewage disposal, lighting systems, and industrial processes, that, when stopped during any interruption of the normal ...

An approach clearance of at least 3 feet should be maintained in front of the fire pump and related equipment.
