When you write a check and there's not enough funds in your account when it's presented, this is considered non-sufficient funds (NSF). When a check is returned due to NSF, it's returned to the payee that deposited the check, at their bank. This allows them to redeposit the check at a later time, if available.

When payment cannot be completed it is often considered as “bounced." If a bank receives a check written on an account with insufficient funds, the bank can refuse payment and charge the account holder an NSF fee. Additionally, a penalty or fee may be charged by the merchant for the returned check.

When your check bounces, it's rejected by the recipient's bank because there aren't enough funds in your account at the time of processing. The bounced check will be returned to you, and you'll likely be subject to an overdraft fee or a nonsufficient funds fee.

If payment is not made within thirty (30) days of this notice, you may be liable under 6-42- 3 of Rhode Island Commercial Law, in addition to the amount of the check, a collection fee of $25.00, and up to three (3) times the amount of the check, but in no case less than $200.00 and not more than $1000.00.

A bad check is one that can't be negotiated because it's drawn on a nonexistent account or on an account that holds insufficient funds to cover its amount. A bad check is also known as a hot check and writing one is illegal.

Cheques may be dishonoured by a financial institution because: There are insufficient cleared funds in the account to cover the value of the cheque. The account holder has instructed the bank not to pay the cheque (called a stopped cheque). The account holder's funds have been frozen.

If you deposit a check that doesn't clear, you won't be charged an NSF or overdraft fee, but you might have to pay a returned check fee. In addition, it's your responsibility to recoup payment from the check writer. If it's someone you know, it may be as easy as asking them to Venmo you or give you cash.

If your bank credited your account for a check that was later returned unpaid for insufficient funds, the bank can reverse the funds and may charge a fee. As the payee, you must pursue the maker of the check if you wish to seek reimbursement.

Unfortunately, both the check writer and the recipient often have to pay a fee if a check bounces. The person who wrote the check may have to pay an overdraft fee or a nonsufficient funds fee. The recipient of the bounced check may be charged a returned check fee as well.

If someone writes you a check that bounces after you deposit it, your bank can reverse the deposit and charge you an NSF fee or “returned item” fee. If you want to retrieve the money from the writer of the check, it's up to you to take care of it.
