Employees of Ohio University do not pay into Social Security. Instead, you participate in a retirement program through Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).

OPERS benefits are subject to local school district income taxes in Ohio. You are responsible for these taxes if your local school district has an income tax, but we cannot specifically withhold the tax from your benefit.

Most Ohio State employees are eligible to participate in the 403(b) and 457(b) Supplemental Retirement Accounts (SRA). These plans allow you to enhance your retirement savings through pre-tax (state and federal only) contributions to a Tax-Deferred Account (403(b) plan) and Deferred Compensation Program (457(b) plan).

OPERS provides retirement income and benefits to Ohio public employees.

With the STRS Ohio Defined Benefit Plan, you receive a monthly benefit payment based on your age, years of service credit and final average salary — not prevailing market conditions — and access to health care coverage if you meet health care eligibility requirements.

You are eligible for a benefit at age 65 with five years of service or any age with 34 years of service.
