Who needs to register as a home improvement contractor? Any individual or any company that solicits, bids on, or performs residential contracting as a contractor or subcontractor on an existing one- to four-unit, owner-occupied primary residence in Massachusetts must register as a home improvement contractor.

To receive any Massachusetts handyman license, you must be 18 years old with three years of documented building experience. The work experience requirement is not specific. Generally, people spend a few years as a registered home improvement contractor doing small projects or working under a construction supervisor.

Massachusetts (M.G. L. c. 149, §29) requires that bonds be provided on any contract exceeding $25,000 for alteration, repair, remodeling, demolition or construction of facilities.
