Get Structural Observation

Structured observation is a qualitative research methodology that has been used by the social sciences for several years. It is a methodology in which an event or series of events is observed in its natural setting and recorded by an independent researcher.

Using a set of criteria and a rubric for scoring, structured observation instruments allow teachers and administrators to evaluate a range of classroom features. These observations inform individual and program-wide professional development and serve as a means of tracking program quality from year to year.

Structural observation is the visual observation of the elements and connections of the structural system at significant construction stages and the complete structure for general conformance to the approved plans and specifications.

Structured observation uses a coding method for data collection. Coding is using previously determined specific behaviors or actions that qualify as manifestations of the behavior of interest. For example, a developmental psychologist is interested in helping behaviors in toddlers.

In a structured observation, the observer has a list of particular behaviors of interest that are the focus of the observation. Rather than noting any behaviors that are noticed, the observer looks specifically for the behaviors of interest and notes the frequency and perhaps duration of their occurrence.

Direct observation is when you watch interactions, processes, or behaviors as they occur; for example, observing a teacher teaching a lesson from a written curriculum to determine whether they are delivering it with fidelity.
