DCT Definition The discrete cosine transform (DCT) represents an image as a sum of sinusoids of varying magnitudes and frequencies. The dct2 function computes the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) of an image.

DCT plays a very important role in digital signal processing. By using the DCT, the signals can be compressed. DCT can be used in electrocardiography for the compression of ECG signals. DCT2 provides a better compression ratio than DCT.

The difference between a Discrete Fourier Transform and a Discrete Cosine transformation is that the DCT uses only real numbers, while a Fourier transform can use complex numbers. The most common use of a DCT is compression. It is equivalent to a FFT of twice the length.

The DCT has the property that, for a typical image, most of the visually significant information about the image is concentrated in just a few coefficients of the DCT. For this reason, the DCT is often used in image compression applications.

The DCT can be used to convert the signal (spatial information) into numeric data ("frequency" or "spectral" information) so that the image's information exists in a quantitative form that can be manipulated for compression.

> DCT is preferred over DFT in image compression algorithms like JPEG > because DCT is a real transform which results in a single real number per > data point. In contrast, a DFT results in a complex number (real and > imaginary parts) which requires double the memory for storage.

The DCT can be used to convert the signal (spatial information) into numeric data ("frequency" or "spectral" information) so that the image's information exists in a quantitative form that can be manipulated for compression.

A DCT is roughly equivalent to a DFT of a vector after it is doubled by mirroring by a symmetric reflection. This produces FFT input that does not have a discontinuity either in the middle or circularly. A DST is roughly equivalent to a DFT after an antisymmetric mirrored extension.
