Though often away from the office, a teleworker is different from a remote employee because there occasionally some in-person office attendance required — though this is not always the case. Another key difference is that a teleworker is often geographically closer to the main office location than a remote worker.

How often you are required to report to an office depends on the agency and the job duties. Telework-eligible jobs are not the same as remote positions, which is a position where you work from home or an approved alternative worksite without a requirement to regularly go into an office.

Supervisors determine eligibility for telework for both the position and the employee based on mission requirements, employee performance, and the needs of the work unit.

The key difference between a remote worker and teleworker is the remote worker works from their home 100% of the time and their official duty station is their home vs. a teleworker would be required to report to the agency worksite at least 2 times per pay period and their official duty station is the agency worksite.
