Heat pipes work on a cycle of vaporization and condensation of the working fluid, which results in the heat pipe's high thermal conductivity. When choosing a working fluid for a heat pipe, the fluid must be able to operate within the heat pipe's operating temperature range.

At the hot interface of a heat pipe, a volatile liquid in contact with a thermally conductive solid surface turns into a vapor by absorbing heat from that surface. The vapor then travels along the heat pipe to the cold interface and condenses back into a liquid, releasing the latent heat.

A double-pipe heat exchanger consists of two metal pipes, one inside the other as shown in Figure 9.3. One fluid flows through the inner tube while the other fluid flows in the annular space between the pipe walls.

Thermal Efficiency Based on thermal modeling comparisons using HTRI software, copper and copper/nickel are typically the most conductive material available for exchanger tubes. Carbon steel, stainless steel and higher alloys are slightly less efficient, but all perform similarly.
