How Much Will You Receive if You Are Granted Auxiliary Benefits? For the most part, an eligible dependent can receive up to 50% of the disabled person's benefits. For instance, if a mother was granted SSDI at a rate of $800 per month, her dependent child could likely receive $400 per month.

Your child's benefit will continue until he or she reaches age 18, or 19 if he or she is still in school full time. Your monthly payments stop with the child's 16th birthday, unless your child is disabled and stays in your care.

You can apply for benefits by calling our national toll-free service at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or by visiting your local Social Security office.

Unlike Social Security benefits, SSI benefits are not based on your prior work or a family member's prior work. SSI is financed by general funds of the U.S. Treasury--personal income taxes, corporate and other taxes.

How much will my child's potential monthly SSI benefit be? Every SSI recipient's monthly payment starts at a total benefit amount deemed by their state and is lowered by their “countable income.” The full federal monthly benefit is $841 (2022).

Surviving spouse, full retirement age or older — 100% of the deceased worker's benefit amount. Surviving spouse, age 60 — through full retirement age — 71½ to 99% of the deceased worker's basic amount. Surviving spouse with a disability aged 50 through 59 — 71½%.

For a parent to be eligible for a benefit, all of the following must be true: The parent is at least age 62. The parent was receiving at least one-half of their support from the deceased worker at the time of death (or at the beginning of the deceased worker's disability).

Who can get child's benefits? To get benefits, a child must have either: A parent who is retired or has a disability and is entitled to Social Security benefits. A parent who died after having worked long enough in a job where they paid Social Security taxes.
