The Coroner is usually not a physician, and is not trained in medicine, Forensic Medicine or Forensic Science. A Medical Examiner is required to be a physician, certified by the American Board of Pathology in the medical specialty of Forensic Pathology, and experienced in the Forensic Sciences.

The coroner's report is a form document that includes basic information about the person who has died, what funeral home is handling arrangements, the next of kin and the cause and manner of death. The postmortem examination report is a detailed document that outlines every finding from the autopsy.

The forensic pathologist deems a forensic autopsy is necessary to determine cause and/or manner of death, or document injuries/disease, or collect evidence. The deceased is involved in a motor vehicle incident and an autopsy is necessary to document injuries and/or determine the cause of death.

Autopsy reports are usually completed within 60 days from the date of autopsy; however, there are cases which can take 90 days or longer depending on the complexity of the case.

Take Custody of the Body This must be done with extreme skill when there is evidence to preserve. It must be done with sensitivity and respect as often family members are at the scene. The Coroner must transport the body to their forensic facilities in cases where an autopsy or other tests must be done.

The agreement rate in Coroner's cases was 80.0%. For natural and unnatural causes, the agreement rate was 56.7% and 84.3% respectively. There were 6 cases (4.5%) where an initial accurate diagnosis might have altered the prognosis of the deceased.

The relatives or carers of whoever has died do not need to contribute to the payment in any way. However, some individuals may wish to request an autopsy for someone that they knew, even if the state did not order one. In this case, the individual in question must bear the cost of the autopsy.

Autopsies are not always required prior to making a professional medicolegal determination as to the cause and manner of death. However, an autopsy may be performed if the Medical Examiner determines, in their sole discretion, that it is necessary in order to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
