Minors employed in the state of California must have a Permit to Employ and Work (commonly referred to as a work permit ). Work permits are typically issued by the school where the student is enrolled.

You may get a work permit from your local public high school. There are four steps in obtaining a work permit: Obtain a work permit application at your local high school (or the application form may be downloaded from the California State Department of Education website(click here).

Can homeschooled children obtain work permits? Yes. However since parents cannot issue work permits to their own children, homeschooled students must get permits from an administrator other than their own parents.

A: Nearly all minors ages 14 through 17 who wish to work in Indiana are required to obtain a work permit. Work permits are obtained from the accredited high school in the school district where the minor resides. To obtain a work permit, a minor must first be hired by an employer.

When school is not in session, minors aged 14 and 15 may be employed no more than eight hours in a day or 40 hours in one week between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. During the summer, however, from June 1 through Labor Day, these minors may work until 9:00 p.m. (California Labor Code § 1391.)

Typically, after an employer agrees to hire a minor, the minor obtains from his or her school a Department of Education form entitled "Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit". The form must be completed by the minor and the employer and signed by the minor's parent or guardian and the employer.

Generally, speaking children 13 years old or younger may not work in California, except in some limited situations. Youth who are 14 and 15 years old may work in a broader range of jobs, but are significantly limited in the number of hours per day and per week they may work, especially when school is in session.
