The eating hierarchy is a play-based approach to introducing new foods. It starts with interacting with food on a preliminary level and working up to biting, chewing, then swallowing. The goal is to provide a multi-sensory experience with the goal of introducing different tastes, textures, and temperatures of food.

As with handwriting and other fine motor development, feeding skills develop best with proper positioning. An OT may recommend foot rests, back supports, or side supports to ensure a child maintains optimal positioning including the hip, knee, and ankle joints each forming a right angle.

THE SOS (SEQUENTIAL ORAL SENSORY) FEEDING PROGRAM It focuses on increasing a child's comfort level by exploring and learning about the different properties of food, such as texture, taste, smell, and consistency. The SOS approach allows a child to interact with food in a playful, non-stressful way.

Based on the principles of the SOS (Sequential-Oral-Sensory) Approach to fussy eating, this group program aims to increase children's tolerance of exposure to new foods and building oral motor skills. SOS is an evidence-based approach to working with children who are fussy eaters.

Feeding therapy, in its simplest form, is when a trained occupational or speech therapist helps teach a child how to eat or eat better. Feeding therapy typically occurs once or twice a week for 1 hour each time, and at NAPA within its intensive model of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week, for 3 weeks.

The goal is to increase familiarity and build tolerance to novel foods with a goal of increasing a child's repertoire of consumed foods through play and interaction.
