The CNS-LS is a short (seven-item), self-administered questionnaire, designed to be completed by the patient, that provides a quantitative measure of the perceived frequency of PBA episodes. The CNS-LS can help physicians accurately diagnose PBA. A CNS-LS score of 13 or higher may suggest PBA.

Key points. The prevalence of pseudobulbar affect (PBA) symptoms is approximately 9% among nursing home residents. The presence of PBA symptoms was associated with more frequent use of psychopharmacological medication, including antipsychotics.

The CNS-LS is a seven-item self-report rating scale that measures perceived frequency and control over laughing and/or crying episodes. It was validated as a PBA screening tool in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) populations.

The primary sign of pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is frequent, involuntary and uncontrollable outbursts of crying or laughing that are exaggerated or not connected to your emotional state. Laughter often turns to tears. Your mood will appear normal between episodes, which can occur at any time.

Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a neurological condition that causes outbursts of uncontrolled or inappropriate laughing or crying. These episodes don't match your internal emotional state. PBA develops as the result of a brain injury or underlying neurological condition, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Poeck defined four criteria for PBA: 1) emotional response inappropriate to the situation; 2) incongruence of emotions and affective response; 3) inability to control the duration and severity of the episode; and 4) emotional expression does not lead to a feeling of relief for the patient.
